When is the best time to paint my house in Rapid City?

When is the best time to paint my house in Rapid City?

With snow on the ground this question might seem out of place, but is it something you need to start thinking about?

With South Dakota being a land-locked northern state, you can expect all four seasons to make their appearance, but only a couple of those are suitable for your house to get an outdoor facelift.

When is Exterior Season?

For many painters who work with all seasons, exterior season begins around springtime. Western View Painting starts around mid-April. Occasionally for Rapid City, warmer weather doesn’t make an appearance until the beginning of May. Exterior projects can then take place throughout the rest of the summer months and usually starts to taper off around October, but it is very dependent on the weather, sometimes stretching into November or stopping with a foot of snow in early October. That is when interior season starts for your inside projects, but those can also be done year-round as well.

Why Can’t We Paint in the Cold?

Besides our painters freezing outside, winter temperatures can affect the paint and its application. As our Rapid City Project Estimator and experienced painter, Chandler says, Lower temperatures increase dry time, affecting application time for multiple coats and the risk of freezing. With latex based paint it can crystallize the paint causing it to bubble or blush.” He also recommends that temperatures should be above 45 degrees for exterior painting projects, which includes nighttime temperatures, to ensure a quality paint job with no concern for the paint or painters!

When is the best time for ME?

Exterior painting projects are a big deal, but they don’t need to be stressful. Armed with the knowledge of when the exterior season is, you are already a step ahead and can plan when your project might take place. Considering that exterior season in South Dakota is flexible with its dates and only lasts a few months out of the year, it’s best to plan ahead and get on your painter’s schedule sooner rather than later. This way you can ensure that your project gets done, that you don’t have to try to squeeze in around other people wanting their house painted, and you can soak up the sunshine while it lasts!

A Note from the Founder

Hi, I'm Rob Yarbro, founder of Western View Painting.

You probably won’t see me holding a paintbrush at your property, but sometimes it’s helpful to meet the person who runs the company you’re hiring to hear what they’re all about.

I’ve found that almost everyone’s had a bad experience with a contractor. At Western View, we wanted to build a company of men and women that could shake our clients’ hands, look them in the eye, and stand by their work. So we’ve built every step of our process around that vision…to give you an elevated painting experience from start to finish.

We’re grateful for the chance to work with you.
